La Résidence is one of those places that just seems to get everything right: lovely airy rooms, lush tropical gardens, jungle-like peaceful swimming pool and colonial architecture that gives it a charming elegance. The old town is just a short stroll west, but to be honest this is one of those places where you might want to stay put.

The hotel has an inviting lounge/bar, which spills out around the inky swimming pool, while the air-conditioned restaurant has al fresco seats in the garden. The spa services are second to none and the general ambience of the hotel, which is loosely based on a temple, is extremely relaxing.

Most of the bedrooms sit in a horseshoe around the swimming pool, some with garden views, others overlooking the river or pool. The rooms succeed in blending traditional materials with modern design, and are spacious with excellent bathrooms. All have a private bathroom or veranda, giving you plenty of space to relax. Bright white walls and wooden floors and furniture give the rooms a homely feeling, while the kingsize or twin beds are smartly covered in crisp white linen with silky throws to add some colour. The bathrooms are tucked behind a sliding bamboo door, and decorated in soothing shades of green, with huge tubs to soak in.

The deluxe rooms are set back, while the garden view rooms and pool view rooms have lovely views. They are identical but with different views. The eight Residence Suites are on the second floor above the spa and have their own terrace with even more space.

The hotel’s main restaurant Ember is beautifully designed from wood, while French windows open onto a shaded terrace. It is open all year round and has great mixed cuisine of Asian specialities and international dishes and there is a great breakfast included, which starts from 5am if you want to get up for sunrise over Angkor Wat. Light bites are available in the Martini Lounge and pool bar throughout the day.
